Before skiers and settlers discovered Snowmass and Brush Creek Valley, the Ute Indians called the area home. In the 1870's the surrounding peaks were named during the Hayden Survey. The land proved to be more valuable for ranching than mining and thus you see ranches today in the surrounding valley. Snowmass has a deep rooted ranching history. Today Snowmass is home to the second largest ski mountain in Colorado with the longest lift served vertical rise in the U.S.
