If you own property in Pitkin County, at some point over the last 15 years you’ve probably spoken to Johanna Saizan Payne at the Pitkin County Assessors office. She has appraised and walked through almost every home in Pitkin County and knows the history of each home quite well.

Johanna has lived in the Roaring Fork Valley for over 30 years. Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, she has a Bachelor of Arts from LSU (Louisiana State University) and has a true passion for real estate. She began her real estate career in college while attending LSU, and has held real estate licenses in New Mexico as well as Colorado since 1979.

Johanna married her husband Wayne, a fine wood worker and general contractor in 1983. Wayne has worked on and built many of the homes in the valley, including a 10,000+sf home he is currently supervising.

In 1988 Johanna became interested in real estate appraising and received her license in both New Mexico and Colorado as a fee appraiser. In 1991 she began working for the Pitkin County Assessor’s Office as the only licensed Certified Residential Appraiser in the office at that time. She worked for Pitkin County for 15 years while her son Brett was in school in Aspen. Brett is now a junior at Mesa State College and Johanna has decided to return to real estate sales with Mason and Morse Real Estate.

Johanna was past president of the Pitkin County Employee Advisory Group. She loves wildlife and has worked for DOW wildlife rescue team. She organized "Rookery Watch", a group of volunteers to monitor the Great Blue Heron Rookeries in the Roaring Fork Valley, from Aspen to Grand Junction. She also monitors bald eagles, golden eagles, osprey and grebe’s reporting her logs to the DOW, the Wildlife and Fisheries, the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory and the Roaring Fork Conservancy.

In her off time, you’ll see Johanna and her husband Wayne canoeing the rivers of the Roaring Fork Valley with her binoculars counting birds. She loves skiing, sailing, rafting, canoeing, traveling and of course bird watching.

Johanna has a working knowledge of the Roaring Fork Valley and the ins and outs of Pitkin County.
