Billed as a restaurant and farm shop, Meat & Cheese was founded in 2008 as the Avalanche Cheese Company, originally to market artisan goat cheeses to the Aspen community. In 2011 it expanded to include a restaurant and a retail operation.
Meat & Cheese specializes in what they term World Farmhouse cuisine, which includes the aforementioned goat cheeses, and also a variety of cured and smoked organic meats, seafood, locally grown produce, and freshly baked bread. To wash it all down, they offer a lengthy and eclectic list of fine American wines, craft beers, freshly-squeezed juices, and Rock Canyon coffees.
The Farm Shop features much of the same fare but in a form that can be taken home to allow you to create your own amazing meals. Non-GMO farm-fresh eggs are always available, as are dry goods like gourmet salts and olive oils, vinegars, spices, and tomato preserves. Housewares are also available, like the coveted Korin line of knives, antique copper pots and other vintage cooking utensils, and Mud pottery pieces. The shop is worth a visit just to check out their mouth-watering selection of over 50 cheeses from around the world and the nation.
